Asides - The Twenty Favorite Actresses Meme

Or, more specifically, twenty actresses you will watch, the quality of the film be damned. Not that these women made many clunkers, but I'm easy anyway. This post comes from again being tagged by The Siren (thanks, I think), with whom my list and no doubt several others share some names. I mean, what list doesn't include Edna May Oliver. My criteria is they make me laugh or cry or think or take a cold shower ( a couple fill all those in one "package"). So in no particular order, and with apologies to the few hundred other actresses I also admire or adore, here goes:

Marion Davies

Anita Page

Bette Davis

Claire Trevor

Gene Tierney
I must add here that this frame is from Leave Her To Heaven and the Technicolor in this scene on the train is stunning.

Edna May Oliver

Ida Lupino

Gloria Graham

Barbara Stanwyck

Marie Dressler

Anna May Wong

Kay Francis

Joan Crawford
Note that I kept Joan and Bette separated - its just safer that way.

Toby Wing

Elsa Lanchester

Bebe Daniels

Katherine Hepburn

Greta Garbo

Myrna Loy

Ann Sheridan

and number 21...

All the uncredited bathing beauties, chorus girls, and dancers of silver screen.

PS - The meme originated at The Film Experience.

What delights me about these lists is the way people make eclectic choices--I mean, most people have the usual suspects (and I'm just as guilty) but a list that contains people like Toby Wing, Elsa Lanchester, Anna May Wong and Edna May Oliver is positively dynamite.

The actresses common to yours and my list are Gloria Grahame and Claire Trevor. Outstanding choices!

Love your list! I second Ivan's comments- and the other thing I love about all these lists are the stunning pictures and how many are different from my pictures and everyone elses. I think it may say something about us, but I'm too tired to figure it out.

Ivan, its that whole noir thing, wanted to put Marie Windsor in there as well, just for her line from Narrow Margin - when detective Brown says she makes him sick to his stomach and she replies "Yeah, well use your own sink". I really do like a number of character actresses and would have included Zazu Pitts and Dame May Whitty, but all ready had two with middle names "May".

J.C., yup, there are a lot of pictures out there - usually I only put on the blog ones that I actually have in my collection, but these are from a number of sources, primarily books on my shelf. Always cool to discover new ones.

Terrific list. I forgot about Elsa Lanchester and Edna May Oliver on my list, both definitely people I would look for with delight in any movie in which appeared.

I love your list! And that is the best picture of Marie Dressler I've ever seen, bar none.

I LOVE your list as well.
Glad to see Ann Sheridan and Gene
Tierney - they often miss out!!!

You earned extra points for including Toby Wing and especially Claire Trevor, who was to me so darned sexy and had such a great screen presence. I limited my own top actresses to leading ladies, but couldn't resist including my beloved Gail Patrick to the list, who made a fair number of movies as a lead. Nice blog. I've only recently gotten to appreciate the Pre-Code and silent movies and performers, so your blog will no doubt keep me informed.

C.K., Thanks for the comments and for stopping by. I visited your blog as well and looks like you've got something pretty good going on there as well. And we are almost in perfect sync with our musical tastes, so great minds obviously think alike.

ressersWhat a wonderful site! I have it bookmarked now. By the way, the actress married to Charles Laughton, who played the Bride of Frankenstein was named Elsa Lanchester, not Lancaster. A not uncommon mistake.

Yikes,I can't believe it let that through,it must have been a late night. Thanks for catching it and glad you like the blog.
